Roc d’Enfer ridge walk

It’s a classic ridge walk, fairly airy in places so you’ll need a head for heights. There are some new chains on one of the steeper sections. Not on all of them though, there is still a section which is fairly scetchy that has a couple of fresh bolts in it. Great if you have a rope, not so usefull otherwise!

It’s important not to set off if you think the going will be wet on top. The path is clay, if it’s wet it’ll clog your boots up and that could make things even trickier, a slip on some sections doesn’t bear thinking about.

Ideally you would leave a car at the Col d’Encrenaz, then park at Foron. Leave Foron and finish at the Col d’Encrenaz 6 hrs? later. Otherwise you are either left with having to complete the circuit on 2.5km on road or taking a direct line from the Col de la Bas back to Foron over the slopes of the Pointe du Replan, there is no path to speak of here and it’s quite hard going.

The day I did it there was a cold breeze blowing over the ridge. It had been dry for 5 days which was just sufficient for the October sun to dry the route out.

Tow bar fitted and radio and not much else!

It has two sets of rims, the ones in these pictures are the new ones with summer tires, the original rusty ones have the winter tyres mounted. I’ll include these in the price (2 are new). It will have a new MOT when I sell it.

It has never gone wrong, the only servicing has been wear and tear items, I’d happily drive it to the UK and back tomorrow without flinching.

40cm of snow at 1800m, no rocks hit.

Pas de la Bide

I great 6 hr circuit from the end of the Valley de la Manche. It starts up the Pas de la Latte crosses the cummit of the Tete de Bostan (2406m) and descends the Pas de la Bide into Switzerland finishing via the Col de Coux.

The ridge ride is one of the best rides in our area. Well it is if you like some fairly technical XC riding with incredible views and some steep drops, the consequences of a fall can be a bit hairy at times. You musn’t mind a few minutes (15 to 40min) fo uphill too.

50 guests for the Pass’portes

This wasn’t a record, the record was 74 and goes back a few years (the passportes weekend again) but this was the first time we catered for them all. We hired the Bel Alpe hotel, lock stock and barrel, the owners spent 20 minutes showing us how to use it and then handed us the keys. We’ve known them since we arrived in Morzine in1999 so it wasn’t as if they were taking a huge risk? The main body of guests came with Andy from Biketreks (thanks Andy!) and in fact we probably new 30/50 guests from previous visits which made things easier. It was hard work, we all (Sam, Gareth, Carl, Sian and John) did a number of 12 hr+ days but it was worth it. Everyone was happy too. But then I maintain that may have had something to do with the weather, it’s very easy to be happy with blue bird morning and 25C in the afternoons. This picture is of the Biketreks crew.

New lift to open

It’s been rumoured for a while, and as we are still in June and as it is not yet open it is still a rumour.

But for mountain bikers on holiday in Morzine, Les Gets and Samoens …..

I stuck my head in through the window of the office at the Grand Massif Express (the big new lift that lifts off from Samoens and takes you 900m uphill to Samoens 1600) and they hope to open on July 11th for pedestrians and bicycles. It’s not “definite” just “peut-être”. If this news is true it’ll be a great addition to the area. I for one will be heading over to Samoens from Morzine, up the Grand Massif Express across to the two lifts at Morillon (careful, they sometimes close for lunch!) up these, traverse over to Flaine on some great mountain biking trails, up the DMZ then take the mother of all descents back down to Samoens. By then you’ll probably want some uplift home!

Standby for a full report and beware the DMZ closes mid August sometime. Check before you set off! You might try looking at the Grand Massif website. Though last time I looked the opening dates had not been published.

Trail building volunteers wanted

This is big news for Morzine, the OT (Tourist Office) is asking for help building a new “easy” trail on Pleney. They have brought in a proffessional from Bike Solution to direct the work and they are looking for voluteers to help out on June 16/17th. Brilliant, I can’t wait. “Engaging the users” is something that has always been a hurdle for the OT in Morzine, lets hope it’s the start of a new dawn.
