We’re full!

Well the call for custom went well. We went from having 2 guests on Saturday night, to 18 (+ 4 staff) for the BBQ on Sunday night. During the week we had 7 guests and Tommy (work experience) staying in the chalet, so every room booked up!

We thank you all!

We went out for two guided mountain bike rides, once on an epic over to Flaine and then a few days later a route that takes in some of our favorite riding routes down to Samoens.

This wasn’t a record, the record was 74 and goes back a few years (the passportes weekend again) but this was the first time we catered for them all. We hired the Bel Alpe hotel, lock stock and barrel, the owners spent 20 minutes showing us how to use it and then handed us the keys. We’ve known them since we arrived in Morzine in1999 so it wasn’t as if they were taking a huge risk? The main body of guests came with Andy from Biketreks (thanks Andy!) and in fact we probably new 30/50 guests from previous visits which made things easier. It was hard work, we all (Sam, Gareth, Carl, Sian and John) did a number of 12 hr+ days but it was worth it. Everyone was happy too. But then I maintain that may have had something to do with the weather, it’s very easy to be happy with blue bird morning and 25C in the afternoons. This picture is of the Biketreks crew.

New lift to open

It’s been rumoured for a while, and as we are still in June and as it is not yet open it is still a rumour.

But for mountain bikers on holiday in Morzine, Les Gets and Samoens …..

I stuck my head in through the window of the office at the Grand Massif Express (the big new lift that lifts off from Samoens and takes you 900m uphill to Samoens 1600) and they hope to open on July 11th for pedestrians and bicycles. It’s not “definite” just “peut-être”. If this news is true it’ll be a great addition to the area. I for one will be heading over to Samoens from Morzine, up the Grand Massif Express across to the two lifts at Morillon (careful, they sometimes close for lunch!) up these, traverse over to Flaine on some great mountain biking trails, up the DMZ then take the mother of all descents back down to Samoens. By then you’ll probably want some uplift home!

Standby for a full report and beware the DMZ closes mid August sometime. Check before you set off! You might try looking at the Grand Massif website. Though last time I looked the opening dates had not been published.

Trail building volunteers wanted

This is big news for Morzine, the OT (Tourist Office) is asking for help building a new “easy” trail on Pleney. They have brought in a proffessional from Bike Solution to direct the work and they are looking for voluteers to help out on June 16/17th. Brilliant, I can’t wait. “Engaging the users” is something that has always been a hurdle for the OT in Morzine, lets hope it’s the start of a new dawn.

Les Gets lifts open

May 30th 2009, the uplifts have opened in Les Gets. I got out on my bike for my first local ride of the season. We started with a circuit of Mt Chery, the precipitous bit was sign posted as closed. It was passable but required a little bit of carrying. We got back to Les Gets, 2 coffees later heated up the Chavannes for one descent, back up and the XC back to Morzine. Bad news – the singletrack back to Morzine is now a 1om wide piste. Ho hum.

Orange Alpine 160′s

The new bikes have arrived! They look unbelievably “bling”. I have been lucky enough to have this day in May for 8 years now. It’s one of the best bits of the job. This year we have a 16″ and an 18″ Orange Alpine 160.

I thought I’d pull the “prototype to this bike out of the garage and make some compare and contrast notes. Apart from the component differences there are a number of obvious frame differences.

The rear swing-arm is bigger and beefier (it looks stiffer) with more mud clearance than the old one.
The headangle is .75 degrees steeper than the old (it is 66.4 degrees according to my iphone)
The bottom bracket is 1.5cm higher
It has a maxle rear axle, should be stiffer.
Sexy new hydroformed? tubes and a frontend that is 1 or 2cm higher than the old bike.
It has more travel, they say 160 mm compared to 130 mm but who knows?

Les Gets (Chavannes and Mt Chery lift) will be opening a week early for mountain bikes on weekends only from May 30th until June 19th. And then from then on full time.

Goodness knows how, there is more than a normal amount of snow about at the moment!

Looks like the “main” lifts will be open June 26th until the August 30th. This came from the Chatel webpage.

Endlessride still has room at the in too.

Provisional Lift opening dates for 2009 are:
June 6th – limited Morzine and Les Gets lifts open (Pleney every day, Chavannes weekend of 6/7 June and then every day from June 14)
June 27th – full area lifts open
Aug 30st – full area lifts close
Sept 6th – limited area Morzine and Les Gets lifts close
